Senate passes Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill 2023

Islamabad, July 27, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Senate on Thursday passed “The Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill, 2023”. The bill, moved by Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, seeks to amend provision of the Pakistan Army Act, 1952, so as to provide the structural underpinnings of raising and maintaining the Army.

As per the Bill, Pakistan Army upon direction or with the concurrence of relevant authorities of the government, may directly or indirectly, carry out activities related to national development and advancement of national or strategic interest. The Senate has accorded unanimous approval to the Board of Investment (Amendment) Bill 2023, aimed at boosting foreign investment in the country with the establishment of Special Investment Facilitation Council.

The bill authorised the government the authority to establish a council, consisting of the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, and four Federal Ministers. The council will be responsible for overseeing efforts to enhance foreign investment in the country.
