Senate Human Rights Committee Condemns Israeli Actions, Deliberates on Domestic Violence and Church Vandalization Issues

Islamabad, 13 Oct 2023: The Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights, led by Senator Walid Iqbal, convened at Parliament House on Friday, passing a resolution condemning Israel’s actions against Palestinians and urging international intervention. The Committee also discussed a controversial private member’s bill, domestic violence incidents, notably the case of minor girl Rizwana, and the vandalization of churches in Jaranwala. The Committee highlighted the importance of preventing domestic child labour and ensuring all citizens receive necessary education.

The resolution against Israel’s actions advocated for a peaceful solution based on pre-1967 frontiers, with Al-Quds designated as the capital of Palestine. Senator Iqbal mentioned the Senate Standing Committee on Interior’s recent approval of a private member’s bill that called for public executions of certain capital offences, stating that the matter of public executions would be thoroughly examined in an upcoming meeting.

The troubling increase in domestic violence was a major topic, with special emphasis on Rizwana’s case. Senator Prof. Dr. Mehr Taj Roghani praised the National Commission for Rights of the Child (NCRC) and law enforcement’s prompt action in the matter. The NCRC Chairperson, Ayesha Raza Farooq, indicated the need for better legislation against child labour and the importance of enforcing Article 25A of the Constitution, which mandates education for all.

The vandalization of churches in Jaranwala was another significant discussion point. City Police Officer (CPO) Faisalabad, Captain (R) Ali Zia, provided details about the incident’s origin, which was a misuse of blasphemy laws for personal vendettas. The Committee criticized the Punjab Government for their perceived negligence during the event. CPO Faisalabad reported the establishment of ‘Meesaq’ Centers across Punjab to promote interfaith harmony and protect minority rights.

The Committee expressed its concern about the misuse of blasphemy laws. Chairperson NCHR, Rabiya Javeri Agha, shared details about individuals currently facing blasphemy charges.
