Islamabad: In a session chaired by Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani at the Parliament House, the Senate today passed a resolution mourning the demise of former Senator Hidayatullah and discussed significant initiatives, including the solarization of agricultural tube-wells in Balochistan. The government’s move towards renewable energy was highlighted as a priority, with direct instructions from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to address energy efficiency and reduce line losses.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Energy Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari detailed the government’s plans during the Question Hour, emphasizing the strategic shift towards solar energy in the agricultural sector of Balochistan. This transition is aimed not only at enhancing energy efficiency but also at supporting the agricultural backbone of the region.
Additionally, the Senate passed “The Election (Amendment) Bill, 2024,” which allows retired High Court judges to be appointed as members of the Election Tribunals. Law and Justice Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, who moved the bill, explained that the amendment was necessary to manage the heavy workload of current High Court judges and ensure timely adjudication of election petitions.
The session also addressed road safety measures in Balochistan, with Communication Minister Abdul Aleem Khan announcing the deployment of 2,500 motorway police officials to oversee traffic regulations and enhance commuter safety across various highways in the region.
The Senate is set to reconvene tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. to continue discussions on national issues and legislative amendments.
