Senate Elections: Final Day for Scrutiny of Nomination Papers

Islamabad, The scrutiny process for nomination papers submitted for forty-eight vacant seats in the Senate is set to conclude today. This critical phase in the election timeline ensures that all candidates meet the necessary legal and procedural requirements before moving forward in the election process.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the election authorities have been diligently reviewing the nomination papers since the submission phase ended. The revised list of eligible candidates is scheduled to be published on the 26th of this month, providing a clear view of the contenders. Following this, candidates will have the opportunity to withdraw their nominations by the 27th, finalizing the roster for the upcoming polls.

The elections, slated for the 2nd of the following month, are pivotal in shaping the composition of the Senate. In the federal capital, members of the National Assembly are tasked with electing representatives for one general seat and one seat designated for technocrats, including Ulema. Similarly, members from the provincial assemblies of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will elect senators to fill seven general seats, two women’s seats, and two technocrat seats, including Ulema, in each province. Additionally, there is a special allocation for non-Muslim representatives, with one seat each from Punjab and Sindh.

To ensure fairness and address any grievances, the Election Commission of Pakistan has established five appellate tribunals. These bodies are responsible for hearing appeals concerning the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers, thereby upholding the integrity of the election process.
