ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice convened at the Parliament House under the leadership of Senator Farooq H. Naek to assess the current state of judicial infrastructure, facilities for the legal community, and the operational framework of the Constitutional Court.

According to Senate of Pakistan, the meeting commenced with the announcement that the Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was unable to attend due to prior commitments, as communicated by Deputy Chairman NAB Sohail Nasir. The absence of both the Chairman NAB and the Federal Minister for Law and Justice led to the deferment of the agenda item concerning NAB.

The Committee focused on reviewing the budgetary proposals related to the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the fiscal year 2026-27. The Secretary of the Ministry of Law and Justice provided a briefing on various ongoing and proposed projects under the programme, including the construction of a new High Court Bar Complex aimed at furnishing modern facilities to support the legal fraternity.

Chairman Naek expressed concerns over the lack of essential amenities in the Federal Constitutional Court, such as a canteen, bar room, and adequate washrooms, underscoring the need for functional infrastructure over mere aesthetics. He also noted maintenance issues in the Islamabad High Court, where one of the two installed lifts was not operational.

Senator Kamran Murtaza highlighted the poor condition of bathrooms at the Federal Service Tribunal, prompting the Secretary of the Ministry of Law and Justice to assure that the matter would be addressed with the Registrar FST.

The Committee recognized the Ministry’s initiatives in archiving and digitizing legal resources, including the Pakistan Code and the DRIS website, which provide updated legal information.

The meeting was attended by Senators Shahadat Awan, Kamran Murtaza, and Mohammad Abdul Qadir.
