Islamabad, The Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat, chaired by Senator Saadia Abbasi, convened at Parliament House on Tuesday to discuss the establishment of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) near Hakla Interchange, as announced by the Board of Investment.
According to Senate of Pakistan, the Committee focused on a public petition regarding the SEZ’s establishment. The members suggested that SEZs should be developed in sparsely populated areas to minimize disruption to established communities and fertile lands, while ensuring accessibility and cost-effectiveness. The Secretary of the Board of Investment provided insights into the general establishment of SEZs, mentioning that they are typically set up in provinces under Federal Government control. However, a Model Zone near Islamabad is planned, intended to serve as a benchmark for other SEZs across the country.
Deputy Commissioner Attock revealed that while three sites are under consideration for the SEZ, no final decision has been made. Following thorough discussions, the Committee directed the Secretary of the Board of Investment and the Punjab Government to conduct a detailed survey for identifying a suitable, minimally populated location for the SEZ. This location should ideally have minimal impact on local agriculture and the environment.
The meeting saw the participation of Senators Muhammad Akram, Musjtaq Ahmad Khan, Saifullah Sarwar Khan Nyazee, Khalida Ateeb, and Kamil Ali Agha. Muhammad Sohail Rajput, Secretary Board of Investment, Deputy Commissioner Attock Rao Atif, and other senior officials of relevant departments were also present.
This meeting highlights the ongoing efforts to balance economic development with environmental and social considerations in Pakistan.
