Senate Committee Addresses Non-Appearance of National Bank of Pakistan President at Special Meeting

Islamabad, The Senate Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges, chaired by Senator Tahir Bizinjo, convened a meeting at the Parliament House to address a Privilege Motion against the President of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP).

According to the Senate of Pakistan, the motion was moved by Senators Naseeb Ullah Khan Bazai and Sardar Muhammad Shafiq Tareen concerning the President of NBP’s non-appearance at a Senate Special Committee meeting. The meeting, held on October 12, 2023, at the NBP Head Office in Karachi, was convened to discuss issues of NBP employees from Balochistan. However, the meeting was delayed by 40 minutes as the President of NBP, who was present in the building, did not appear.

Committee members expressed disapproval of the President’s conduct, with Senator Bazai emphasizing the lack of seriousness in addressing matters presented at the country’s highest forum. The National Bank of Pakistan responded, stating that the ex-CBA members’ unauthorized attendance at the meeting caused industrial unrest, leading the President to refrain from appearing in an attempt to defuse the situation.

The NBP management and Finance Division offered an unconditional apology for the inconvenience caused to Senate members and affirmed their respect for them. The Chairman of the committee deferred the issue, directing the Finance Secretary to appear and brief on the matter, and anticipated the presence of the Finance Minister for further discussion.

The meeting was attended by Senators Saifullah Abro, Naseeb Ullah Khan Bazai, and Sardar Muhammad Shafiq Tareen, along with the Secretary Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, the President of NBP, and other relevant officials.
