Senate Advocates for Modernizing Islamic Studies Programs


Islamabad, In a significant stride towards educational reform, the Senate of Pakistan has unanimously passed a resolution calling for the alignment of M.Phil and Ph.D. programs in Islamic studies with contemporary thinking and principles derived from the Holy Quran. The resolution, moved by Senator Abdul Qadir, urges all universities in Pakistan to revise their postgraduate Islamic studies curricula to incorporate research, critical thinking, scientific methodologies, and practical Quranic applications that meet the demands of modern times.



According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Senate session also saw the passage of “The International Islamic University (Amendment) Bill, 2023” and “The Pharmacy (Amendment) Bill, 2023”, alongside the introduction of three additional bills: “The International Institute of Technology, Culture and Health Sciences Bill, 2024”, “The Pakistan Minerals Regulatory Authority Bill, 2024”, and “The Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal (Amendment) Bill, 2024”. Furthermore, “The Falcon University of Sciences and Technology Bill, 2024” was introduced, indicating a broad legislative effort to enhance Pakistan’s educational and regulatory frameworks.



In response to a motion, Caretaker Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Murtaza Solangi shared updates on the National Plan for Flood Telemetry, which includes the establishment of 707 telemetry stations on rivers across Pakistan to monitor flood situations. He highlighted Japan International Cooperation Agency’s commitment to assist in setting up 45 of these stations. Solangi also reported on the progress of barrage extension and modernization projects in Sindh and Punjab, noting Punjab’s completion of its tasks and ongoing work on Sukkur and Guddu barrages in Sindh.



Additionally, Solangi addressed the House on the submission of annual reports by the Council of Islamic Ideology, underscoring the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in its advisory functions on Islamic matters.



The Senate’s decisions reflect a concerted effort to modernize Pakistan’s educational offerings and infrastructural capabilities, aligning them with contemporary needs while grounding them in Islamic teachings and values.
