Srinagar: The Kashmir Valley, in the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, experienced its first snowfall of the season in the higher reaches, accompanied by widespread rains across the region, causing a significant drop in temperature and affecting daily activities.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the snowfall occurred notably in Sonamarg within the Ganderbal district and the Margan Top area of the southern Himalayas, continuing overnight. This development coincides with ongoing intermittent rains that have been soaking the valley for two consecutive days, bringing daily life to a slower pace. Meteorological Department officials have forecasted that other higher reaches may also see snowfall tonight.
The plains, including Srinagar, have faced continuous rainfall since this morning, which has led to a noticeable decrease in temperature, falling 6-12 degrees Celsius below the usual for this time of the year. Thursday’s temperature recordings showed Srinagar at a maximum of 21.5 degrees Celsius, which is 7.8 degrees below the typical temperature for the day.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, has predicted further rain and thundershowers in scattered locations across the valley. Additionally, the department has issued an advisory alerting to the risks of flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas, advising residents and travelers to exercise caution and stay informed through weather updates and advisories.
