Islamabad: The Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, announced that the scope of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) Amendment Bill is confined to digital media, ensuring that it will not impact electronic and print media. This development is considered a significant move for safeguarding working journalists.

According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Tarar addressed media representatives at the Parliament House, emphasizing the importance of the PECA Amendment Bill for regulating digital media. He noted that existing laws already govern print and electronic media in the country.

Tarar highlighted the necessity for rules governing digital media, given the nature of these platforms where individuals can express any opinion. The bill aims to introduce a regulatory framework to address this issue.

The Minister affirmed the government’s commitment to engaging with media bodies, including the Parliamentary Reporters Association, Joint Action Committee, Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA), and All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), inviting them to discuss the bill further.
