Saving lives under fire: Peacekeepers from Pakistan

Islamabad, In a heartfelt tribute to the valor of its peacekeepers on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, the United Nations has showcased the heroic acts of Major Furqan Niazi from Pakistan through a newly released video. The footage highlights his critical role in a life-threatening incident that resulted in casualties among his team and local civilians.

According to United Nations Pakistan, the incident occurred in January when an ambush targeted a UN vehicle carrying injured civilians in the disputed territory of Abyei. Major Niazi, despite being injured, managed to save the lives of several people during the attack, although the confrontation claimed the life of his colleague, Sepoy Muhammad Tariq, among others.

The video released captures Major Niazi’s journey of recovery and his profound determination to return to the mission area. “I am going to the place where all of this happened,” Major Niazi expresses in the video, illustrating his resolve to continue serving despite the personal risks involved.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, Mohamed Yahya, emphasized the significance of Pakistani peacekeepers’ commitment, stating that they represent humanity’s pursuit of peace. He acknowledged their sacrifices in ensuring the safety of vulnerable communities amidst conflict.

This year marks a continuing tradition where over 200,000 Pakistani military and police personnel have participated in UN missions globally since 1960, making Pakistan the fifth-largest contributor to UN peacekeeping efforts.
