Salik Hussain Advocates for Tolerance at Gandhara Symposium in Islamabad


Islamabad, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, the Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, emphasized the need for promoting tolerance and understanding across diverse faiths to foster a harmonious global community. Speaking at the Gandhara Symposium, the Minister highlighted the importance of unity against extremism and the value of intercultural dialogue.



According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during his speech at the opening ceremony in Islamabad, Chaudhry Salik Hussain called for standing united against extremism and injustice, noting that diversity is a strength. He underscored the significance of interfaith and intercultural dialogues as essential tools to combat challenges like extremism, and lauded Pakistan’s unique heritage in facilitating cooperation among different faith communities.



The event, which was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also featured an exhibition of Gandhara art, showcasing the cultural richness of the region. Foreign delegates and Buddhist leaders from countries including Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Nepal, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and China were in attendance. Vidura Wickramanayaka, the Sri Lankan Minister for Cultural Affairs, was among the distinguished guests.



The two-day symposium, which aligns with the observance of Vesak Day—marking the birth, enlightenment, and death of Lord Buddha—attracted numerous Islamabad-based diplomats, scholars, artists, and art enthusiasts. The gathering not only celebrated Pakistan’s commitment to inter-faith harmony but also its dedication to preserving and promoting its historical and cultural heritage.
