Russia Aims to Fortify Relations with Pakistan under SCO Framework


Moscow: Russia has expressed a strong desire to enhance its relationship with Pakistan, focusing on counter-terrorism efforts within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) framework. This commitment was underscored during a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Syed Tariq Fatemi, Pakistan’s Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, in Moscow.



During the discussions, Syed Tariq Fatemi conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to expanding bilateral cooperation with Russia. These efforts are aimed at sectors such as energy, connectivity, and trade, which are seen as crucial areas for development.



Fatemi provided a thorough briefing on the current South Asian geopolitical landscape, voicing Pakistan’s concerns over potential regional tensions. Of particular note was the apprehension regarding India’s potential suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, which could have significant repercussions for regional stability.



The Russian Foreign Minister acknowledged the importance of improving relations between India and Pakistan and expressed support for normalization efforts, emphasizing the positive outcomes this could bring for regional stability.



On the subject of bilateral relations, Lavrov expressed satisfaction with the continuous growth in cooperation between the two countries. He highlighted key projects, including new Steel Mills and various connectivity initiatives, as evidence of this progress.



Additionally, Syed Tariq Fatemi delivered a letter from Prime Minister Sharif to President Vladimir Putin, further indicating the intent to strengthen ties between the two nations.
