RSS-affiliated ABVP vandalises portraits of social reformers inside Delhi’s JNU

New Delhi, February 21, 2023 (PPI-OT):The students belonging to the Hindutva group Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Monday night vandalised portraits of several prominent social reformers, including Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, Periyar Erode Venkatappa Ramasamy, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Karl Marx, Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule among others at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

The JNU Student Union’s (JNUSU) President, Aishe Ghosh, said that the portraits were on the walls of the union’s office which were damaged by the ABVP, and many students were injured in the act. She said that the ABVP attempted to disturb the communal harmony inside the campus, which would not be tolerated at any cost. She added that the union strongly condemned such acts of violence.

On Sunday evening, the ABPV – a right-wing all India student organisation affiliated to the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) – organised a wreath-laying ceremony on the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, former Indian ruler and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan. The ABPV also put up his picture alongside others in the student unions’ office.

Ghosh said that a candlelight march was organised in the campus in memory of the IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Bombay student Darshan Solanki, who was institutionally murdered recently by a casteist environment. The ABVP attacked the students to derail the movement against caste discrimination, she added.
