Rohingya Muslims demand release from Jammu jail

Jammu, July 18, 2023 (PPI-OT): Over 200 Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar lodged at a “holding centre” in Jammu for the past over two years held a protest and clashed with the Indian police jail guards inside Hiranagar sub-jail in Jammu region of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The Rohingyas were demanding their release from the jail.

A total of 271 Rohingyas, including 74 women and 70 children, are lodged at the sub-jail Hiranagar that was notified as a “holding centre” on March 5, 2021. Indian police used brute force to disperse the protesters who reached near the main gate of the jail.

The Rohingyas are a Bengali-dialect speaking Muslim minority in Myanmar. Following persecution in their country, many of them entered India through Bangladesh and took shelter in Jammu.
