Resolution of Kashmir Dispute Vital for Regional Peace, Says Pakistan’s Military Chief

Singapore: In a significant address at the 22nd Shangri-La Security Dialogue in Singapore, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee of Pakistan, emphasized the urgent need for resolving the longstanding Kashmir dispute to ensure peace in South Asia. General Mirza underscored the necessity of invigorating existing dialogue frameworks at all levels to foster effective conflict prevention.

During his speech, General Mirza highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to a global system rooted in sovereignty and restraint, advocating for negotiations as a fundamental component of South Asian security. He cited recent tensions with India, particularly India’s alleged use of water resources as a strategic tool, as a direct violation of international law, warning that any attempts to obstruct Pakistan’s water access would be considered acts of war.

The General reiterated Pakistan’s stance that the Kashmir conflict is the primary source of Indo-Pakistani tensions. He insisted that its resolution, in line with United Nations resolutions, is crucial for achieving lasting peace in the region. Pakistan remains committed to pursuing a peaceful coexistence with India, grounded in dignity, equality, and mutual respect.

General Mirza also criticized the lack of a formal dialogue system with India and called upon the international community to facilitate its restoration. He expressed concern that the situation following the Pahalgam incident poses a threat to regional development and stability.

Addressing the global community, General Mirza stressed the importance of an effective crisis management system, urging world powers to adopt principles of mutual restraint, recognition of red lines, and equilibrium to manage potential conflicts.
