Report Highlights Plight of Minorities in India

Islamabad, On Minorities Rights Day, a new report has been released by Kashmir Media Service, highlighting the ongoing discrimination and violence faced by minorities in India. The report criticizes the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party government for implementing policies that have marginalized minority communities, including Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, and lower caste Hindus.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the report details various incidents of violence and oppression against minorities in India. It mentions the demolition of 50,000 houses belonging to Muslims in Hyderabad in April 2022 and reports 400 incidents of violence against Christians across 23 states in India in 2023. The Kandhamal district of Orissa saw the killing of hundreds of Christians and the burning of 600 villages on August 25.

The report also refers to the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, following the assassination of Indira Gandhi, in which approximately 17,000 Sikhs were reportedly killed. The head of the US Commission on Religious Freedom has noted a significant decline in religious freedom in India under Modi’s regime.

Since 2020, the US Commission on Religious Affairs has included India in its list of countries of concern, and various human rights organizations have labeled India as a dangerous country for minorities. The report stresses that violence, intimidation, and harassment against minorities have become commonplace in India.

The increase in hate crimes against Muslims and other minorities under the current regime is also a key concern raised in the report. It calls for global rights bodies to intervene to protect minorities in India from the growing trend of Hindutva ideology.

The report concludes with an appeal to the international community to recognize and address the plight of Indian minorities, urging action to ensure their basic human rights are protected.
