Religious Tensions Escalate in Maharashtra: Scholars and Imams Targeted

Mumbai: Recent incidents in the Nandurbar district of Maharashtra have heightened communal tensions, with Hindu extremists reportedly assaulting a Muslim religious scholar and a mosque imam. This violence is part of a troubling rise in attacks against Muslims in the area.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the violence against Muslims has intensified following the recent parliamentary elections. Mufti Shahrukh, a 26-year-old religious scholar, and his companion Muzamil were attacked by a group of masked assailants wielding sticks, an event that took place hours after a separate assault on Imam Hafiz Zubair near Jalal Masjid. While the police registered an FIR for the attack on Imam Zubair, they have yet to file an official report for the assault on Mufti Shahrukh.

Former Maharashtra Minister and Congress leader Mohammad Arif Naseem Khan has condemned these incidents, calling them “sad and alarming” and demanding swift action from local authorities. These events mark a significant increase in hostility, with five separate attacks reported in Nandurbar over the last several days, signaling a distressing pattern of targeted violence that has community leaders and activists calling for urgent intervention.
