Record Number of 141 Opposition MPs Suspended from Indian Parliament

New Delhi, The ongoing Winter Session of the Indian Parliament has seen the suspension of a record 141 opposition MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, amidst repeated adjournments and uproar. The latest suspension includes 49 MPs from the Lok Sabha, adding to the previous tally of 92 suspensions.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the fresh round of suspensions followed a significant disturbance in Parliament, resulting in three adjournments throughout the day. Among those suspended is Farooq Abdullah from Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. This recent action was primarily in response to demands from opposition MPs for the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah, following a security breach in Parliament on December 13.

The Indian National Congress has accused the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of attempting to pass key legislation without opposition representation, labeling it an ‘Opposition-less’ Parliament. Most of the suspensions will last for the remainder of the winter session, which concludes on Friday.

The suspensions significantly impact the INDIA alliance, an opposition coalition, with 95 of its 142 Lok Sabha members and 46 of its 101 Rajya Sabha members now suspended.
