Srinagar, The commencement of the holy month of Ramadan has been officially announced in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), set to start from tomorrow, following the sighting of the crescent moon. The announcement was made by the territory’s Grand Mufti, Nasir-ul Islam, confirming the beginning of this significant month of fasting and spiritual reflection for Muslims.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Grand Mufti Nasir-ul Islam declared the start of Ramadan after consultations with a committee of Islamic scholars, including notable figures such as Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Maulana Rehmatullah. The decision was reached unanimously, marking Tuesday as the first day of Ramadan in Kashmir. The Grand Mufti also conveyed his greetings to the people, emphasizing the importance of prayer, Quranic recitation, and seeking forgiveness during this month. Additionally, he announced that the Taraweeh prayers, which are special nightly prayers held during Ramadan, would begin this evening.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a prominent religious and political leader in the region, also extended his warm wishes to the Muslims of Jammu and Kashmir and the broader Muslim community worldwide on the occasion of Ramadan. In his message, he highlighted the month as a time for deep spiritual growth, urging the faithful to immerse themselves in prayer and to reflect upon the teachings of the Holy Quran.
It is noted that the people of IIOJK align their observance of Ramadan and Eid celebrations with Pakistan, reflecting their cultural and religious affiliations and the political sentiments regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir.
The announcement of Ramadan in IIOJK not only marks the beginning of a period of devotion and fasting but also serves as a reminder of the region’s unique socio-political context and the deep-rooted religious traditions that continue to guide the daily lives of its people.
