Muzaffarabad, In a strong show of solidarity with the Kashmiri struggle for self-determination, citizens of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) took to the streets in various cities, including Muzaffarabad, to observe the Kashmiris’ Right to Self-Determination Day.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the demonstrations, held on the anniversary of the 1949 United Nations resolution recognizing the Kashmiris’ right to decide their own future, were a call to the UN to fulfill its long-standing commitments. The resolution, passed on this day in 1949, advocated for a UN-conducted plebiscite allowing Kashmiris to determine their fate.
In Muzaffarabad, a significant protest rally gathered at Burhan Wani Shaheed Chowk. Participants, many carrying banners and posters, emphasized the urgency of the UN addressing its resolutions on Kashmir. Their slogans included appeals for the UN to recognize Kashmiris’ demand for self-determination.
Similar rallies and protests were reported in various areas of the Neelam and Jhelum valleys, as well as in Mirpur, Kotli, and Rawalakot. The demonstrators called on the United Nations to facilitate a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir as per its resolutions.
The protestors’ banners and slogans were clear in their message, with phrases like “Go India go back,” “We want a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir,” and “We want freedom from India.” The rallies were marked by vociferous chants supporting Kashmir’s liberation from Indian control and denouncing Indian policies in the region.
The events in AJK highlighted the enduring sentiment among Kashmiris and their supporters for the resolution of the Kashmir dispute and the granting of the right to self-determination, a right acknowledged but yet unfulfilled by the international community.
