Srinagar: Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in India, criticized the central government’s approach to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), declaring that the region is being governed by outsiders contrary to the aspirations of its people. Speaking at a large rally in Srinagar, Gandhi also targeted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for neglecting important issues while focusing on less pertinent matters.
According to Kashmir Media Service, during his address, Gandhi highlighted the transformation of J&K from a state to a union territory, stating it is now “ruled by outsiders directly.” He expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership of the Lieutenant Governor, accusing him of working against the local populace’s interests. Gandhi remarked, “The Lieutenant Governor is Raja who is working against the wishes of people here. He doesn’t know how to work.”
Gandhi continued his critique by pointing out Modi’s emphasis on his radio program, “Man ki baat,” accusing him of ignoring “Kaam ki baat,” which he defined as addressing unemployment and restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. “Kaam Ki baat means to address the unemployment and to restore statehood in Jammu and Kashmir,” he explained, adding that Modi’s program no longer resonates with the audience.
Reflecting on the political climate prior to the Lok Sabha elections, Gandhi commented on Modi’s altered demeanor, which he observed closely in parliament, contrasting it with the public’s perception through media. “I see him very closely in the Lok Sabha while people see him on TV. His mood has changed and his face has changed. Credit goes to INDIA alliance for this,” Gandhi stated, implying that the opposition’s efforts have significantly impacted Modi’s confidence and public image.
Gandhi’s remarks underscore the ongoing political tension in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting significant discontent with the central government’s policies in the region.
