Rahul Gandhi condemns stripping of journalists in MP

New Delhi, April 08, 2022 (PPI-OT):Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has slammed the Madhya Pradesh government after photos of a journalist and a few activists forced to strip down to their undergarments while in police custody went viral on social media. Rahul Gandhi in a tweet said that the Bharatiya Janata Party-run government was “scared of the truth.”

“The fourth pillar of democracy was dismantled in the lockup! Either sit in the lap of the government and sing their praises or go to jail. The government of ‘New India’ is afraid of the truth,” he said. The incident took place on April 2 in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh but only came to light Thursday after photos of the semi-naked journalists emerged on social media.

The journalists and activists were protesting the arrest of theatre artiste Neeraj Kunder – who police claim made obscene remarks against BJP MLA Kedarnath Shukla and his son, Guru Dutt. After the photos of the detained persons in underwear went viral on social media, two local police officials were transferred.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi after meeting Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Sharad Yadav on Friday said that opposition parties must unite to fight the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and discussions are underway to determine the framework of a united front.

“Opposition parties that are against RSS and Narendra Modi should come together. Discussions are ongoing on how they should come together, what should be the framework, and what has to be developed,” he said.

On India’s present economic situation, the Congress leader said, “You can’t imagine India’s economic situation and job condition. Never in your life would you have seen what was coming next. The employment structure of this country, its backbone, is broken. Small and medium businesses, small shopkeepers, and the informal sector are our backbone.”

“Today, the country is in a very bad situation. Hatred is being spread and the country is being divided. We have to bring the nation together and walk on the path of brotherhood, which has been a part of our history,” he said.
