Islamabad: Qaiser Ahmed Shaikh, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, acknowledged the contributions of United Nations bodies during a meeting with Mohamed Yahya, the United Nations Resident Coordinator (UNRC), and Geir Tonstol, a representative from the International Labor Organization (ILO). The meeting, held at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, focused on the collaborative efforts between the International Maritime Organization (IMO) of the United Nations and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs to address challenges within Pakistan’s maritime sector.
According to Press Information Department, the minister emphasized Pakistan’s ongoing transition towards an environmentally friendly maritime industry to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the United Nations Development Programs. Qaiser Ahmed Shaikh outlined initiatives such as the adoption of aquaculture, electric and hybrid vessels, route optimization, and digitalization as part of these efforts. He also highlighted the federal and provincial governments’ collective focus on addressing pollution and improving the air quality index.
In discussing labor rights in Pakistan, the minister noted the government’s commitment to strengthening labor courts and ensuring fair compensation for contract employees and daily wagers in accordance with international standards. Acknowledging labor rights challenges, particularly in remote areas, he mentioned the cooperation between provincial labor departments and the ILO to safeguard workers’ rights.
The federal minister also commended the UNRC’s role during the 2022 floods, which impacted 33 million people in Pakistan. He appreciated the UNRC’s support in terms of funding and human resources during this difficult period and noted the ongoing collaboration to aid the recovery of flood-affected areas.
