Punjab’s First Woman Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif Announces Major Initiatives for Women’s Empowerment


Lahore, In a significant stride towards women’s empowerment, Punjab’s first woman Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, unveiled several major announcements for the women of Punjab on International Women’s Day. The ceremony, held in Lahore, also marked the launch of the “Never Again” Women’s Safety App, aimed at ensuring the safety of women across the region.



According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced an increase in the job quota for women in the Punjab Public Service Commission from 10% to 15%. She also directed the immediate recruitment of women for vacant posts across various departments. A fund of one billion rupees will be allocated for the construction of daycare centers at workplaces, alongside the establishment of hostels for working women, paid internships, and a provision of 50% loans for women pursuing online businesses.



Furthermore, Chief Minister Sharif announced that the Board of Revenue would ensure daughters’ shares are determined and properties are transferred to heirs without charging a death fee for property gifted to sisters and daughters. Legislation will be enacted to approve maternity leave within three days and to guarantee separate facilities for women in gymnasiums, stadiums, government institutions, and public transportation, including pink bikes for women riders.



The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of education and opportunities for women, advocating for a 50 to 70 percent ratio of women in university fee reimbursements and international scholarships. She pledged to restore the handicrafts industry across Punjab and enact strict legislation to protect domestic workers.



Chief Minister Sharif’s speech highlighted the crucial role women play in society and her vision for a Punjab where women’s contributions are recognized and facilitated. She stressed that the honor of being Punjab’s first woman Chief Minister belongs not only to her but to every woman striving for progress and equality. She praised the efforts of women in various sectors, including law enforcement and governance, and encouraged families to support their daughters’ ambitions fully.



The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including the American Consul General Christine K. Hawkins, Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, members of the assembly, IG, government officials, and a large contingent of female police officers.
