Punjab Police Steps Up Support for Transgender Community

Lahore, In a notable meeting at the Central Police Office, a delegation of transgender activists met with Inspector General Police Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar to discuss issues facing the transgender community. The delegation, led by Victim Support Officer Zanaya Chaudhry, highlighted the ongoing efforts and needs of the transgender community in Punjab.

According to Punjab Police, the delegation included prominent trans activists Shahzadi Rai, Neeli Rana, filmmaker Aleena, and Urwa. The meeting also saw the participation of Victim Support Officers of Punjab Police, including Masooma Ali, Kashish Khan, and Inza Khanzadi. This gathering was a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by the transgender community in the region.

During the meeting, IG Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar informed the delegation about the police Tahaffuz marakaz’s (protection centers) role in providing legal assistance and guidance to the transgender community. Over 1300 different cases involving members of the transgender community have been assisted this year, showcasing the proactive approach of the Punjab Police.

Dr. Anwar highlighted that the police Tahaffuz markaz had been instrumental in providing relief to hundreds of transgender individuals by resolving issues related to violence, abuse, theft, and economic exploitation. He also mentioned the appointment of transgender individuals as victim support officers in all police Tahaffuz centers across the province, ensuring justice delivery at the police station level.

The IG Punjab emphasized the priority given to providing employment, driving training, and licenses to transgender individuals. He outlined the collaborative efforts with various public and private institutions to enhance social and legal protection for the transgender community.

Dr. Anwar ordered the acceleration of measures for the protection and welfare of transgender people from the platform of the Police Tahaffuz Center. He stressed the importance of addressing the social problems and insecurity faced by the transgender community, ensuring no effort is spared in their support.

The meeting was attended by high-ranking officials, including Additional IG Operations Shahzada Sultan, SSP Sahibzada Bilal Umar, AIG Operations Dr. Asad Ejaz Malhi, and ASP Gulberg Syeda Shahrabano Naqvi, among others. This initiative by the Punjab Police is a critical step towards fostering inclusivity and support for marginalized communities.
