Punjab Police Steps Up Anti-Drug Efforts Under Chief Minister’s Vision for a Drug-Free Province

Lahore: In a major push to combat drug trafficking and abuse, the Punjab Police is stepping up its efforts across the province, aligning with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s vision for a drug-free Punjab. The intensified crackdown, led by IG Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar, has led to significant arrests and drug seizures this year.

According to Punjab Police, the province-wide operations have resulted in 80,910 raids on drug dealers’ hideouts, capturing 44,830 suspects and leading to the registration of 44,767 cases. Authorities have confiscated substantial quantities of illegal substances, including 31,628 kilograms of charas, 725 kilograms of heroin, 1,137 kilograms of opium, 314 kilograms of ice, and over 737,000 liters of alcohol. Furthermore, 1,240 individuals grappling with addiction issues have been admitted to rehabilitation facilities for necessary treatment.

In the provincial capital alone, the police have executed 7,347 raids this year, arresting 7,576 suspects and registering the same number of cases. The seizures in Lahore include 5,487 kilograms of charas, 240 kilograms of heroin, 285 kilograms of opium, 132 kilograms of ice, and 50,392 liters of alcohol. IG Punjab has issued directives to ramp up special operations against drug dealers and smugglers, placing a strong emphasis on intelligence-based strategies to dismantle the networks involved in the illicit drug trade. He has also called for increased surveillance and daily operations around educational institutions and hostels to curb the drug supply chain, ensuring that all involved are apprehended and face stringent legal consequences.

The ongoing operations highlight the provincial government’s commitment to eradicating the menace of drugs, ensuring the well-being and safety of its citizens.
