Punjab Police Ramp Up Efforts Against Smog and Environmental Hazards

Lahore: Under the directive of Inspector General of Police Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, Punjab Police is intensifying efforts to combat environmental pollution and prevent the pervasive issue of smog across the province. This initiative includes strict actions against vehicles, factories, and brick kilns identified as major contributors to air quality degradation.

According to Punjab Police announcement issued on 27 September 2024, a significant number of arrests and cases have already been made this year as part of the anti-smog campaign. Specifically, 724 suspects have been taken into custody, with 934 cases registered. In Lahore alone, the drive has resulted in 70 arrests and 179 cases.

Dr. Usman Anwar has mandated a reinforced crackdown on smog-inducing activities, especially focusing on highways and industrial areas. He has also ordered the use of Safe City cameras to enhance monitoring and enforcement against vehicles exacerbating smog conditions. Punjab Highway Patrol and Traffic Police are likewise instructed to increase patrols and checks on vehicles violating environmental standards.

The IG Punjab stressed the importance of collaboration with the Environment Department to bolster these efforts. Immediate measures against agricultural burning, industrial emissions, and improper waste disposal are being prioritized, with field officers required to accelerate their activities and report back to the Central Police Office regularly on their progress.

This proactive environmental campaign by Punjab Police aims to significantly mitigate the harmful impact of smog, ensuring healthier air quality for residents throughout the province.
