Lahore: The Punjab Police, under the leadership of Inspector General Dr. Usman Anwar, has significantly intensified its crackdown on smog contributors across the province, targeting vehicles, factories, and kiln owners responsible for air pollution. This escalated enforcement effort has led to the arrest of 729 individuals and the registration of 939 cases since the beginning of the year.
According to Punjab Police, the ongoing operations focus on curbing the environmental impact of industrial emissions and vehicular pollution, especially in densely populated and industrial areas including Lahore. In the provincial capital alone, police have arrested 71 people and registered 180 cases as part of their anti-smog activities.
IG Punjab has issued directives to further accelerate these efforts, emphasizing the importance of using Safe City cameras to monitor and act against vehicles emitting excessive smoke. Additionally, the Punjab Highway Patrol and Traffic Police have been instructed to enhance patrols and enforcement against polluting vehicles on major highways.
Dr. Usman Anwar highlighted the collaboration with the Environment Department, stressing the comprehensive approach being taken to address the issue of smog. He has ordered immediate and stringent actions against any activities that contribute to air pollution, including the burning of crop residues and garbage, as well as unregulated industrial and kiln operations, to ensure better air quality and environmental health in Punjab.
