Islamabad: In a major operation led by Inspector General Dr. Usman Anwar, Punjab Police has arrested 61,540 individuals this year for their involvement in electricity theft, a crime that significantly impacts the national treasury.
According to Punjab Police, the force has registered 99,572 cases against the accused, with 60,278 of these cases having completed challans submitted for prosecution. The spokesperson detailed that of these, 8,424 individuals have been convicted, underscoring the effectiveness of the ongoing crackdown. In Lahore alone, 32,057 arrests have been made with 31,559 cases registered, and legal proceedings are still underway for many.
IG Punjab has directed that the campaign against electricity theft not only continue but intensify, with a zero-tolerance approach towards those compromising the financial health of the nation. The police will also persist in supporting electricity companies to curb these illegal activities, ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
