Amritsar, June 03, 2022 (PPI-OT):Indian Punjab has been put on high alert ahead of Operation Bluestar anniversary. Ahead of June 6 anniversary of Operation Bluestar, also known as “Ghallughara Divas”, security in the holy city of Amritsar has been beefed up.
Along with the city police, four additional companies of paramilitary forces (two from the Central Reserve Police Force and two from the Rapid Action Force), besides 1,500 Punjab Armed Police personnel have been deployed in the city.
Police Commissioner Arun Pal Singh said they patrolling and security had been increased at vulnerable places, including markets, religious shrines and tourist spots. Sikh activists said “Pagg Atte Punjab Bachao” convention has been scheduled at Guru Nanak Bhawan on Saturday (June 4).
Dal Khalsa and other Sikh organizations have planned to hold protests and rallies in Punjab on June 6 to commemorate the 38th anniversary of Operation Bluestar, a controversial Indian army operation to expel Sikh militants from Amritsar’s Golden Temple. Prominent events will occur in Amritsar. Activists will rally at Guru Nanak Bhawan June 4 and from Gurdwara Bhai Veer Singh to Akal Takht June 5.
Sikh activists under the banner of the Dal Khalsa have given a call for one-day “Amritsar shutdown”. Besides, the Dal Khalsa will organise “Azadi March” in the evening. Additional protests and rallies in other regions of Punjab are almost certain. Gatherings are most likely at Sikh temples, parks, public squares, government buildings, and major intersections. Participation will probably vary considerable by location; events in large cities, including Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Chandigarh, could draw thousands of attendees.
