Lahore: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif met with a delegation led by the World Bank’s Regional Vice President Martin Raiser, who declared Punjab a ‘Regional Champion’ for its efforts in environmental improvement. The meeting focused on joint initiatives for poverty alleviation, IT and infrastructure development, and environmental and social progress.
According to a statement by Chief Minister of Punjab, discussions included accelerating current World Bank projects and launching new ones in the province. Martin Raiser praised Punjab’s public welfare initiatives, noting their alignment with the World Bank’s ‘country partnership’ goals. The delegation expressed full support for environmental and sanitation improvements in Punjab.
The World Bank also commended the merger of the Population Welfare Department with the Health Department, anticipating improved services as a result.
Chief Minister Sharif acknowledged the World Bank’s role in Punjab’s development and requested further support in education, health, tourism, and environmental projects. She announced the Punjab Clean Air Program, supported by the World Bank, which includes introducing electric vehicles and establishing Vehicle Inspection Stations to combat pollution.
Martin Raiser emphasized the World Bank’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Pakistan, particularly Punjab, highlighting the province’s leadership in education, IT, and climate change initiatives.
