Punjab Launches Major Flood Prevention Initiatives in Five Cities

Lahore: In a decisive move to mitigate flood risks heightened by climate change, Punjab has initiated extensive flood prevention projects in five major cities. This strategic response was outlined during a key meeting at the Board of Revenue, chaired by Relief Commissioner Punjab, Nabil Javed, with senior officials from various governmental departments in attendance.

According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab announcement issued on 09 October 2024, the meeting detailed the impacts of a 30% increase in rainfall over recent years due to global climate change, with expectations of further increases. Relief Commissioner Javed unveiled plans for pilot projects in urban and rural areas aimed at averting flooding. These initiatives involve collaboration between the PDMA, Local Government, Housing, and Irrigation Departments. Additionally, the projects include vital measures in hill torrent regions, particularly in DG Khan and Rajanpur, to prevent loss of life and property. A new mandate requires obtaining an NOC from the Irrigation Department before construction near rivers in flood-prone zones.

The projects are segmented into short, medium, and long-term goals, with completion targets ranging from June 2025 for immediate measures to up to five years for comprehensive flood management solutions.
