Lahore: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved a set of stringent Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aimed at preventing accidents during sewer cleaning operations. The decision seeks to enhance the safety and well-being of sanitary workers by mandating comprehensive safety measures.
According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, a committee led by Additional Chief Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo has developed these SOPs. The procedures require that manholes not be opened, approached, or entered without assessing the presence of toxic gases and oxygen levels. Sanitary workers must don complete protective clothing and use necessary safety equipment while on duty.
The SOPs stipulate the installation of safety barriers, warning boards, and traffic signs at work locations. Only trained personnel are authorized to operate jetting and suction machinery, and sludge removal is prohibited in the absence of a sanitary supervisor. A Permit-to-Work system is now mandatory for entry into manholes, and Rescue 1122 must be alerted in emergencies.
In addition, the SOPs call for regular training in safety measures and emergency response procedures for sanitary workers, along with periodic mock emergency drills to bolster preparedness and safety.
