Punjab Government Launches Mechanized and Group Farming Initiative to Boost Vegetable Production.

Lahore: On the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, sustainable measures have been launched for the first time to increase the production of tomatoes and onions in Punjab, under which a project of mechanized farming of vegetables, especially tomatoes and onions, has been launched, with an investment of 3 billion rupees.

According to Chief Minister of Punjab, the project offers a 70% subsidy on planters, pruners, and other agricultural equipment for mechanized farming. Farmers will only need to cover 30% of the cost. Additionally, the Punjab government is providing a 70% subsidy on pulping units, dryers, and graders for value addition.

The initiative aims to form farmer enterprise groups consisting of landowners with up to 25 acres in six districts. These groups will receive specialized training at the Farmers Field School to learn modern agricultural methods. In particular, Wahari districts have been selected for onion farming, while Khushab, Sheikhupura, and Muzaffargarh districts will focus on tomato cultivation. The government plans to connect these farmer groups to the international market to expand sales opportunities.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif expressed her commitment to ensuring the prosperity and happiness of Punjab’s farmers. She emphasized that mechanized and group farming will not only boost vegetable production but also lower costs. The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of affordable tomatoes and onions for daily consumption and assured that measures are being taken to prevent price hikes.

In an effort to support the Agriculture Transformation Project, a helpline, 0800-17000, has been established. Interested parties can also reach out through the Agriculture Department’s website, Facebook, or the relevant Irrigation Reform Offices. The Chief Minister assured that, by the grace of Allah, food items in Punjab are available at the lowest prices compared to any other province, and prices are being continuously monitored.
