Punjab Government Initiates Development in Fish Trading and Farming


Lahore, Following the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, a crucial meeting led by Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb was convened to outline new directives for the Department of Fisheries aimed at bolstering fish trade and farming within the province. The assembly underscored the Chief Minister’s ambitious plan to expand fish and shrimp cultivation, calling for a detailed scheme to enhance aquaculture productivity.



According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, the session delved into various proposals regarding project models, timelines, budgeting, and the advantages and drawbacks of potential ventures. A key resolution from the meeting was the instruction to gather data on aquaculture practices from successful nations like Singapore and the UAE, alongside other proficient neighboring countries.



Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb articulated the Chief Minister’s vision of provincial development across all sectors, emphasizing the goal to augment foreign exchange earnings through advanced fish farming and trading techniques. Initiatives to increase shrimp production using top-tier international technologies were highlighted, alongside strategies to solicit consultancy and technical guidance from countries with notable aquaculture yields.



The plans include the launch of the Development of Shrimps Aquaculture, Saline, and Brackish Areas of Punjab project, targeting the agricultural utilization of otherwise barren, saline, and brackish terrains. These new endeavors in shrimp and fish farming are anticipated not only to generate significant employment and revenue opportunities but also to contribute to food security by escalating fish production within the region.
