Punjab Government Ensures No Price Increase for “Roti” Amid Wheat Policy Discussions

Lahore: In a significant move to alleviate public concerns over rising food costs, the Punjab government has decided to maintain the price of “Roti”, a staple food item, despite ongoing discussions about wheat release prices. The decision was confirmed during a recent meeting chaired by Punjab Food Minister Bilal Yasin, which focused on the province’s wheat stock and pricing strategies.

According to Punjab Food Department announcement issued on 23 September 2024, the meeting was attended by key officials including Secretary Food Ehsan Bhutta and Director Food Punjab Shoaib Jadon. The primary agenda was to deliberate on the current wheat stock and the potential pricing for wheat releases. Minister Yasin emphasized that the directives from the Punjab Chief Minister are aimed at prioritizing public relief and ensuring that the cost of essential items like “Roti” remains stable to support low-income families.

The Punjab Food Minister further stated that sales of wheat from government warehouses would be under strict supervision to prevent any price manipulation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to combating profiteering and hoarding, urging businesses to comply with the policy of keeping essential goods affordable. Moreover, Yasin clarified that there would be no barriers or restrictions on the supply of wheat or flour to other provinces, ensuring a steady distribution across regions.

The meeting also included discussions on the procedures for releasing wheat from government reserves, which will require approval from the Chief Minister. This measure is part of a broader strategy to regulate the market and prevent sudden price hikes.
