Punjab Food Authority Cracks Down on Food Adulteration Ahead of Eid al-Adha

Lahore, Under the directive of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has escalated its field operations, seizing large quantities of expired and counterfeit food products across the region. Provincial Minister for Food Bilal Yasin, addressing the media at the Punjab Food Authority headquarters, announced the results of recent raids, highlighting a significant crackdown on food adulteration practices.

According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, a notable operation took place at Transformer Chowk Shah Alam Market, where authorities dismantled a fake production unit. The raid resulted in the confiscation of 3,400 kg of expired spices, 2,620 kg of kheer mix, 400 kg of Ispaghoul (psyllium), 1,400 kg of spice bags, and 1,000 kg of packaging materials. These items were found being repackaged and falsely labeled as reputable brands.

Minister Yasin emphasized the dangers posed by these unscrupulous practices, noting that the expired food items were destined for distribution to shops and hotels in Lahore and surrounding areas. He praised the PFA’s efforts for preventing the sale of these hazardous products, thereby protecting public health.

The Punjab Food Authority’s recent initiatives include heightened surveillance and strict enforcement against establishments that compromise food quality. A special meat safety task force has been conducting inspections and monitoring at various points in the city, particularly focusing on the quality of meat and milk.

In the run-up to Eid al-Adha, the authority has intensified actions against the adulteration mafia, with severe penalties for those found in violation of food safety laws. Over the past 100 days, operations have led to the disposal of over 500,000 liters of fake cold drinks, 400,000 liters of adulterated milk, and over 150,000 kilograms of prohibited meat, along with significant quantities of other harmful substances.

The crackdown extends to ensuring compliance at food points within cattle markets, where strict checks are being enforced to guarantee adherence to government licenses and regulations. Minister Yasin also outlined forthcoming measures to tackle the challenges posed by packaged milk, underscoring the government’s commitment to food safety and public health.

As Eid al-Adha approaches, these rigorous efforts by the Punjab Food Authority are crucial for ensuring that the festivities are celebrated with safe and quality food products.
