LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif digitally inaugurated Nestlé Pakistan’s biomass steam plant in Sheikhupura on Sunday, marking a significant development in the province’s environmental sustainability and renewable energy efforts. The new facility, constructed with a $4.5 million investment, will utilize 72,000 tonnes of agricultural residue as fuel annually, offering a sustainable alternative to the prevalent practice of crop residue burning.

According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, the plant is designed to generate 30 tonnes of steam per hour, leading to fuel cost savings of approximately $2.15 million annually. The facility is also anticipated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 24,345 tonnes each year, contributing to improved air quality by discouraging the open burning of agricultural waste.

During the inauguration, Chief Minister Sharif was briefed on Nestlé Pakistan’s operations and its environmental initiatives. She commended Nestlé’s efforts, stating that the biomass steam plant exemplifies Pakistan’s dedication to a circular economy and renewable energy. Sharif emphasized that the project aligns with the Punjab government’s priorities of environmental protection and sustainable industrial development. She reiterated the provincial government’s commitment to supporting climate improvement initiatives and welcomed collaboration with organizations like Nestlé in the pursuit of environmental sustainability.
