Lahore: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif called on member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to collaborate on initiatives for women’s empowerment, emphasizing that empowering women benefits the entire nation. Speaking at the 9th OIC Ministerial Conference on Women, she advocated for education, opportunities, dignity, and freedom for every girl in the Muslim world.
According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, the chief minister highlighted the importance of joint efforts through the OIC platform to provide greater opportunities and protection for women. She expressed gratitude to delegates for attending the conference in Lahore and emphasized Islam’s guidance on women’s rights and dignity. Paying tribute to historical figures and her family, she underscored the need for collective measures in addressing challenges faced by women.
The chief minister outlined various initiatives by the Punjab government aimed at empowering women economically and educationally, including scholarship and employment programs. She noted that women constitute over 60 percent of beneficiaries in provincial schemes and are actively participating in projects promoting education, employment, and property ownership. Efforts to integrate rural women into the global economy through digital connectivity and economic empowerment initiatives were also highlighted.
In addressing public safety, CM Punjab detailed measures such as Safe City Authority services, mobile police stations, and facilities for women lawyers, which aim to enhance women’s security and access to legal assistance. The chief minister reiterated her commitment to promoting financial inclusion and entrepreneurship among women, respecting cultural traditions and Islamic teachings while pursuing empowerment goals.
Reflecting on personal experiences, she stressed the significance of resilience and perseverance in representing the aspirations of Pakistanis. The chief minister paid homage to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and highlighted advancements like the appointment of a woman as a chief justice, marking significant progress for women in leadership roles.
Concluding the address, the chief minister affirmed that women’s empowerment equates to national progress and invited conference participants to experience Lahore’s rich cultural heritage. She expressed optimism that the OIC platform would fortify collective efforts to ensure education, dignity, opportunity, and security for women across the Muslim world.
