Punjab Aims for Complete Anti-Polio Coverage, Targets Missed Children


Lahore: In a robust response to polio eradication efforts, Chief Secretary Punjab, Zahid Akhtar Zaman, has mandated a full-scale drive to ensure 100% immunization coverage of children missed in the ongoing anti-polio campaign across 15 districts of the province. This directive was issued during a video conference with deputy commissioners on Tuesday, focusing on intensifying the campaign’s reach.



According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab announcement issued on 10 September 2024, the Chief Secretary underscored the critical nature of the campaign and demanded that all deputy commissioners personally oversee the operations within their jurisdictions. With a goal of completely eradicating polio from the region, Zaman called for a united effort characterized by a strong national spirit.



During the meeting, health officials briefed that the anti-polio drive had commenced robustly, with approximately 3.8 million children vaccinated on the first day. The campaign aims to immunize a total of 13.9 million children against polio. To ensure thorough coverage, special monitoring teams have been deployed, particularly in high-focus areas such as Lahore, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi, where the campaign will continue until September 15. In contrast, the drive in the other 12 districts Attock, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Chakwal, D.G. Khan, Gujranwala, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Okara, Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan, and Sheikhupura will conclude by September 13.



The Chief Secretary also requested a detailed report on the environmental samples that tested positive for polio in Chakwal and Sahiwal, emphasizing the need for vigilant monitoring and swift action to prevent further spread.



This intensified polio eradication initiative reflects Punjab’s commitment to a polio-free future, marking a critical phase in the province’s public health efforts.
