Punjab Advances Solarization of Agriculture Tube Wells to Boost Sustainability

Lahore: In a significant stride towards agricultural sustainability, the Punjab Planning and Development Board convened a meeting to discuss the transition of fossil fuel-operated agriculture tube wells to solar energy. The meeting, chaired by Barrister Nabeel Ahmad Awan, reviewed the ongoing progress and set forth plans to expand solar energy use among the province’s farmers.

According to Planning and Development Board – Punjab announcement issued on 16 August 2024, the meeting underscored the multiple benefits of solarizing tube wells, which include reducing reliance on costly diesel fuel and grid electricity, as well as promoting environmental sustainability. The shift is aimed at supporting sustainable agricultural practices and enhancing energy efficiency across Punjab.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders including Secretary Agriculture Mr. Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, Secretary Energy Dr. Naeem Rauf, and other senior officials from the sectors of agriculture, energy, water, and irrigation. They discussed strategies to accelerate the adoption of solar technology in farming operations, recognizing the critical role of farmers in the regional economy and the need for sustainable support mechanisms.

The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to facilitating a greener economy and supporting the province’s agricultural sector through innovative technologies.
