Raichur, January 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):Protests broke out in southern Indian state Karnataka’s Raichur city after District Judge Mallikarjun Gowda removed the portraits of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Ambedkar’s from a wall. The portraits were removed to hoist flag on Republic Day. Videos of the removal of the portraits went viral on social media, which led to massive protests in Karnataka district.
The protestors, who blocked major roads in the city, demanded that the High Court should take suo moto notice of the issue and sack the judge. They also demanded a public apology from the judge for his action.
BJP MLA and former minister Shivanagouda Naik said that the judge’s act is a matter of shame and demanded his immediate removal. He said that the judge had insulted the architect of the Constitution. “He has displayed a distorted mind set by his act. The judge refusing to unfurl the Indian flag until Ambedkar’s photo is removed is a matter of shame for civilised society,” he said.
“This is painful. The act has caused outrage all over the state. The High Court should intervene immediately and sack the judge. I will bring this matter to the notice of the government and Law Department,” he added.
