Protesters Block Key Highway in Srinagar Over Water Crisis

Srinagar: Residents of Mirgund, North Kashmir, have escalated their ongoing struggle against severe water scarcity by blocking the Srinagar-Baramulla highway, causing significant disruption to demand immediate action from local authorities.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the protest saw both men and women actively participating, effectively bringing traffic to a halt along the crucial route. The demonstrators expressed their frustration over persistent water shortages that have not been addressed by the Jal Shakti Department, responsible for water resource management in the area. Their demands include urgent repairs to the local water supply infrastructure or the provision of water tankers to meet their daily needs.

The situation temporarily stabilized after the arrival of Deputy Superintendent of Police Pattan along with other officials, who negotiated with the protesters. The blockade was lifted only after assurances were given that the community’s grievances regarding the water supply would be promptly addressed.
