Prime Minister’s Climate Coordinator Calls for Expanded Marine Conservation Efforts

Islamabad: Romina Khurshid Alam, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change, has called on the governments of Sindh and Balochistan to enhance their efforts in marine conservation. This appeal comes in the wake of the Balochistan government’s recent initiative to declare Churna Island as a Marine Protected Area, part of a broader effort to safeguard Pakistan’s marine biodiversity.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Alam lauded the Balochistan government’s decision to protect Churna Island, describing it as a significant step toward sustainable environmental development. She emphasized the importance of expanding such protected areas to meet the global target of conserving 30% of ocean areas by 2030.

Alam expressed her full support for the Balochistan government’s efforts to preserve marine biodiversity and the fragile ecosystem of the island, which is home to diverse wildlife. She stressed the critical need to protect these ecosystems from the adverse effects of climate change and human activities, calling for collective action and shared responsibility.

The initiative aims to regulate human activities that detrimentally impact marine ecosystems, addressing threats like overfishing, pollution, and the broader impacts of climate change. She underscored the urgent need for continued and expanded protection of marine areas to ensure the health and sustainability of the country’s marine resources.
