Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to represent Pakistan at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York from September 23 to 27, focusing on critical issues including the situations in Palestine and Kashmir, as well as the global rise of Islamophobia. The Foreign Office announced that these topics will be highlighted in his address scheduled for September 27.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Prime Minister Sharif, who briefly visited London en route to New York, emphasized his intent to bring Pakistan’s perspectives to the global stage. His agenda includes addressing long-standing issues under the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) purview, particularly the conflict in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and the ongoing strife in Palestine.
The trip originally included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who had to cancel his participation due to other pressing diplomatic engagements and preparations for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting. The Foreign Office outlined that while in New York, Prime Minister Sharif will reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and discuss reforms in international economic relations and financial systems.
Prime Minister Sharif is also expected to advocate for concerted global efforts to combat climate change and Islamophobia, reflecting Pakistan’s commitment to leading on these critical issues internationally. Additionally, he is slated to participate in high-level meetings, including discussions on sea-level rise and peace leadership, alongside scheduled bilateral meetings with key world leaders and U.N. officials.
This visit underscores Pakistan’s proactive role on the international stage, especially in its upcoming term on the UNSC, aiming to foster global peace and prosperity through strengthened international cooperation.
