Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Targets Electricity Theft and System Improvements

Islamabad: In a firm commitment to overhaul Pakistan’s energy sector, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has prioritized the prevention of electricity theft and enhancement of the transmission system. During a review meeting with the Power Division today, he set forth directives to tackle these longstanding issues effectively.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Prime Minister Sharif instructed the Federal Minister of Power to collaborate closely with provincial governments to enhance the performance of electricity distribution companies. This initiative is part of a broader ‘whole of government’ approach aimed at systemic reform within the sector.

Sharif emphasized the importance of bolstering resources, including the increase of police forces and tehsildars, to support anti-electricity theft measures within Distribution Companies (DISCOs). He stressed that corruption within these companies will be addressed with strict action.

Additionally, the Prime Minister ordered the immediate convening of a steering committee to discuss the transition of agricultural tube wells in Balochistan to solar energy, highlighting a move towards more sustainable energy solutions.
