Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has outlined an ambitious strategy aimed at transforming Pakistan into a regional leader in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, emphasizing efforts to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) in the information technology sector.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during a meeting with a three-member delegation from the Asia Internet Coalition, led by Managing Director Jeff Paine, the Prime Minister discussed his government’s focus on enhancing fundamental AI infrastructure. He reiterated the commitment to advancing the Digital Pakistan Initiatives, which include the digitization of government systems and the provision of fast, uninterrupted internet services across the country. The discussion also covered significant digital reforms such as the digitization of the Federal Board of Revenue, which is expected to facilitate a transition to a digital and automated economic framework.
Additional topics addressed during the meeting included data safety, internet content regulations, and strategies to combat electronic crimes. The delegation was informed that consultations are ongoing with various stakeholders concerning the draft of the Personal Data Protection Bill, aimed at safeguarding personal data and enhancing cybersecurity measures.
