Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Advocates for Stronger Pak-Azerbaijan Relations

Islamabad, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif called for bolstered cooperation between Pakistan and Azerbaijan across multiple sectors during a meeting with Azerbaijani Ambassador Khazar Farhadov.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Prime Minister highlighted the significance of enhancing trade and investment, energy cooperation, defense, connectivity, education and cultural exchanges, and people-to-people contacts. He emphasized the strong, brotherly ties between the two nations and expressed a warm welcome to Ambassador Farhadov, conveying his regards to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and reminiscing about their recent discussions.

Prime Minister Sharif also mentioned his productive visit to Baku in June 2023 and reiterated his invitation to President Aliyev to visit Pakistan. He congratulated Azerbaijan for being chosen as the host for the upcoming COP 29 Summit in November 2024 and noted his anticipation for the formal invitation from the Azerbaijani Minister of Ecology, who is scheduled to visit Pakistan next week.

Further discussions included plans to send a high-level ministerial delegation to Baku to deepen bilateral relations. Ambassador Farhadov updated the Prime Minister on the current state of bilateral relations, including new flight connections between Baku and Karachi and the expected visit of the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister to Pakistan later this month.

Prime Minister Sharif expressed his admiration for Baku’s urban aesthetics and proposed exploring a sister city agreement between Islamabad and Baku to foster closer ties.
