Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering a cashless economy during a review meeting held in Islamabad. He underscored the importance of ensuring internet availability and enhancing public access to technology as essential steps toward this goal.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister directed the relevant authorities to develop a comprehensive roadmap with specific timelines to establish a fully digital payment system nationwide. He highlighted the positive outcomes of the ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Finance and related state institutions in promoting cashless transactions.
Prime Minister Sharif also addressed challenges faced by consumers using the digital payment system, urging immediate solutions. He advocated for the continued promotion of digital transactions through the government-backed Raast QR Code system, which aligns with the administration’s vision of a cashless economy. Additionally, he called for a media campaign to encourage utility bill payments via QR codes.
The meeting revealed that digital payment processes in federal and provincial government institutions are advancing rapidly, with completion expected by December. It was noted that all payments under the Benazir Income Support Programme are currently conducted through digital wallets. Efforts are also underway to introduce advanced digital payment solutions in areas lacking internet connectivity.
Furthermore, it was announced that cheque payments under the Asaan Assignment Accounts will cease on the 15th of this month, with all subsequent transactions transitioning to the Raast digital system. Training for Drawing and Disbursing Officers on this change has been completed.
